Notes from the atelier

Building an AI-first website builder on Drupal, in the open. Releases, design decisions, and what we learn along the way. RSS feed.

  • Your visitors shouldn't have to watch you work

Atelier can put your public site on pause — visitors see a finished version while you rebuild the real one behind it. It doubles as an undo button for the whole site, and as the safest way to run one.

  • · Engineering

Live is the absence of a link

How Atelier's freeze ended up as one symlink and no mode flag — including the tidier first design that would have served settings.php, and the three exposures we only found by attacking our own frozen site.

  • · Engineering

The agent painted it white. The white was pink.

Our brand agent wrote a colour it could not read back. The fix was not to change colour spaces — it was to show the model the same colour twice, in the space it manipulates and the space it recognises.

  • Atelier vs WordPress: the same ownership, a different front door

Both are GPL and self-hosted. Here is how a chat-driven builder built on Drupal compares with WordPress 7 and its new AI tools, on the criteria that matter when you pick one.

  • Why we built Atelier

A website builder you talk to, running on your own machine, built on Drupal. Here is the thinking behind it.
